The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team scorched San Antonio Keystone 76-49 Jan. 23 in District 4-3A play of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

The Flames led 14-5 after the first quarter and 35-23 at the intermission. The Cobras trimmed the deficit to 52-44 going into the final stanza, but the Flames continued to play the way they had to start the contest.

“We knew they’re going to shoot the ball a little bit better,” head coach Zakk Revelle said. “Probably a couple of calls are not going the way that they went the first time just because you’re in a different venue and all of those things. So we expected that. For us to score 17 in a quarter is actually really good. That’s a really good way to play the game. The tough part was we don’t want to give up 21, but we started the game by only giving up five in a quarter and we ended the game by giving up five in a quarter. The fourth quarter was a really good way to end and head back home with the win.”

The Flames built their lead by pushing the pace for quick buckets in transition and off their press thanks to steals and then made shots in their half-court sets.

Revelle credited several Flames for the outcome.

One was senior center Judah Phillips, who had “a big dunk,” and another was senior guard Jase Marshall, who followed the dunk with a 3-pointer to force the Cobras into a timeout in the fourth period.

“At that point you could say it was over,” the coach said. “That whole game was dependent on how we started and how we finished it. We played well and so big kudos to Jase and Judah, our seniors for leading us well, especially with having a couple of starters on the bench with foul trouble.”

He commended Marshall, who showed what he can do in the final stanza.

“He did not play very good quarters one through three and he would be the first to say that,” Revelle said. “It wasn’t that he was playing bad per se; he just wasn’t playing up to his standards.”

The coach also singled out junior forward Seattle Hampton who “had a really good start to the game.”

“He was really the one that got us the lead in the first with his aggressiveness,” he said. “Jase didn’t necessarily play well in the first but his leadership and the way he distributed the ball felt like he scored more. And so big kudos to him. I thought that was a really good, really cool moment for a senior who’s done a lot for our program. So I would say overall, it was a really great team effort. Those are always good to get because they’re hard.”

The game was moved up by about two hours to allow the Flames to return home before the bad weather came.

“We were able to get it done and get back before all the real nasty cold stuff hit,” Revelle said. “So we’re glad to have done it and got the win.”

Faith welcomes San Marcos Academy Wednesday, Jan. 28, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity game to follow at 6:15 p.m. Then the Flames welcome Austin San Juan Diego Saturday, Jan. 31, in varsity games only. The Lady Flames play at 2 p.m. and the Flames follow. The program will honor seniors before the home games Saturday.
